Letter to Residents: Police Department Closure

1/21/2026

To the Residents of Americus,

We are writing to inform you of an important and difficult decision regarding the future of the Americus Police Department. After careful consideration, extensive review of our town’s finances, and consultation with legal and public safety partners, the governing body has decided to close the Americus Police Department effective February 10th, 2026.

This decision was not made lightly. We recognize the long history of service provided by our local officers and the trust they have built within our community. The safety of our residents remains our highest priority, and this decision was driven by financial sustainability, staffing challenges, and the increasing costs associated with maintaining a standalone police department while meeting state and federal requirements.

Public safety services will continue without interruption. Law enforcement coverage will be provided through the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, ensuring protection and emergency response for our community. This partnership allows us to maintain essential services while using taxpayer resources responsibly.

We understand that this change may raise concerns and questions. Town leadership is committed to transparency throughout this transition. We will continue to share information, listen to community feedback, and work closely with our law enforcement partners to ensure a smooth and effective transition.

We want to sincerely thank the officers who have served our city with professionalism and dedication. Their service has made a lasting impact on our community, and we are deeply grateful for their commitment.

If you have questions or would like additional information, please contact join us at the upcoming public meeting at 7:00 PM on February 3rd, 2026, at Americus City Hall.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support as we work to ensure the long-term stability and safety of our community.

Sincerely,

Nicky Nuessen

Council President
